  1. sr-71The SR-71 is classified as an advanced, long range, strategic, reconnaissance aircraft. The blackbird was the fastest, and highest flying plane during its entire time of service.
Whenever the crew of the blackbird detected a missile threat the pilot would simply put the pedal to the medal and gain speed and altitude. Its main defense was to simply outrun the missile.
Speed and altitude cause their own significant problems. The problem with high speed is that the compressed air causes the aircraft to become super heated. Cockpit temperatures could reach 450f or more. The body does not function the same at high altitudes as it does at sea level so special suits had to be developed for the crewmembers.
The fastest recorded speed of the blackbird was 2,193.17 miles per hour. The highest recorded altitude that the aircraft achieved was 85,069 feet. Remember that these are the recorded speeds and altitudes. It is very possible that the blackbird may have done much better under different conditions. It is also possible that the Air Force isn't telling all.
The days of active military duty of this magnificent airplane are over for good but if you or a friend or loved one was ever associated with this airplane you can create a custom pilots ring, or a custom SR-71 crewmans ring to tell the story of your service.
