You probably have heard of the silkworm missile which was very heavily utilized by the Iraqi's and Iranians in their was during the 1980's. It was really popularized by the press because it was the thing to report about at that time.

This missile was developed by the Chinese and has several variations. We will talk about the SY1 and SY2 in the intrest of time today. There are some minor differences in the two but the main thing is that the SY2 used solid fuel for propulsion. The reason for the switch was that the SY1 was unreliable and the liquid fuel would cause problems. The liquid fuel version of the missile had a longer range but the solid fueled motor was a better tradeoff.

The maximum range of the SY2 is 130 kilometers. It is 6 meters long and weighs in at slightly less than the SY1 at 1,720 kilograms. The silkworm is no joke and is well respected by our Navy ring customers because of its capabilities to inflict damage. The maximum range of the SY1 was 150 kilometers.
