  1. sabre

The sabre is usually a backsword. A backsword is a sword which has one sharp edge and a thick edge for strength. It also has a handguard to protect the users fingers and knuckles. It is normally curved but this is not always the rule. Many cavalry sabres were straight and had double edges which made them suitable for thrusting rather than slashing.

Napoleon used sabres extensively in his cavalry charges but they became less useful as pistols and carbines came into use. Sabres are not used in combat anymore but they do maintain a ceremonial significance. They are used more by drill teams in competition and ceremonial drill. The sabre will probably never become obsolete as a ceremonial piece because it adds so much pizzazz. I enjoy seeing a good drill team conduct sabre drill. We associate them more with the marine corps but they are also used by army drill units.

The sabre is just like the custom military ring in that it is used to speak of the past. It is a wonderful item of military tradition and adds an elegant effect when worn  the military uniform.
