Operation Northern Watch was the follow on  to Operation Provide Comfort. In this operation US and coalition forces used air power to enforce the no-fly zone which had been established in Iraq after Operation Desert Storm. This zone was above the 36th parallel in Iraq. The reason that it had to be established was to prevent Saddam from bombing the Kurds in northern Iraq.

 This operation began on Janruary 1st 1997 after Saddam decided that he wasn't going to honor the No Fly Zone anymore. During this operation US and coalition aircraft were fired upon every time that they patrolled the skies but none were ever shot down.
