  1. divebomberThe era of the Dive Bomber is long gone but these bombers certainly made their mark in history. This bomber was developed to be effective on ships, bridges, etc. where you needed a direct hit rather than a shrapnel and explosive effect on the target. It was very efficient and had an advantage over regular high altitude bombers in several ways:

First was the increased accuracy of this type of attack which reduced the number of bombs and airplanes needed for a successful assault.

The Dive Bomber was harder for enemy antiaircraft  gunners to hit because of their steep attack angle. The Dive Bomber attacked from almost directly overhead so gunners typically could not elevate the gun tube high enough to get rounds onto the target. I don't think that this would be the case during mordern times because advanced millile and redar technilogy would be able to engage the bombers long before they could get in range.

There were also some drawbacks to using Dive Bombers which had to be overcome. The biggest was manueverability. The Dive Bomber built an enormous amount of speed during its attack so the pilot had to be able to pull up out of the dive before he smacked the deck or the water. The high speeds also made the controls harder to operate. The solution to this was to add dive brakes to slow down the planes descent. This enabled the pilot to be able to come close to the target and to pull up effectively as soon as he has dropped his bomb.

This bomber is now obsolete along with this type of attack. I compare it to the use of smart bombs today because the concept of use is similar. The Dive Bomber is an excellent choice of design for the Navy pilot's ring. This is a piece of equipment that never should be forgotten.
