  1. occupationThe military occupation is the next step after the invasion. Thse are terms which apply to a country hostile to the country that it controls. An occupation has occurred when the hostile army has control and authority over a territory. An occupation is not necessarily a military goernment in that the the occupying Army has no control whatsoever over the area that it dos not physically occupy. This is almost the same as the Afghan government which seems to have no control over the area outside of Kabul.

According to the laws of war an occupation only includes the physical area that the hostile force occupies. So being occupied and governed are two different things.

Sometimes we attack or conduct raids with no intent whatsoever of occupying. Examples of this may be hostage rescues and attacks on personnel or facilities which are deemed to be a threat. A prime example of a military occupation is our present situation in Afghanistan. A military occupation is one of the different type of events that you can use a custom military ring to commemorate. Many of my operation Iraqi Freedom and enduring Freedom Ring customers have already done so.
