The Master Chief Petty Officer is the highest ranking enlisted person in the Navy and the Coast Guard. The other Petty Officer ranks are Chief Petty Officer and Senior Chief Petty Officer.

This rank corresponds to the rank of Sergeant Major in the Army and the Marine Corps. He is the senior enlisted member of the chain of command so just like the Sergeant Major he is the biggest, baddest, meanest, ugliest mutha in the valley.

This rank gets the respect of enlisted and officers. The chief is revered for his knowledge and is considered to be the technical expert in his field.

Official duties of the Chief Petty Officer are to assist the commander in issues regerding: quality of life, discipline, training, and morale. Aboard submarines he is known as the "Chief of the Boat."
