The united States Army issues marksmanship badges to soldiers to show the level of expertise that they posses with different types of weapons. The bar which is attached to the bottom of the badge denotes the specific type of weapon that the soldier has qualified with. Some of the weapons categories are pistols, rifles, small bore rifles, grenade launchers, etc.

The lowest award is the marksmsn badge which is next to the bar on the right. A marksman is a better than average shooter of the weapon listed. The sharpshooter is the next higher badge, with the expert badge being the highest award. It is possible to be qualified on different weapons systems so that the shooter may wear two or more badges.
