You have probably never heard of LRRPS but they were the thing during the Vietnam War. The acronym LRRPS stands for long range reconnaissance patrol. LRRPS were used extensively during the Vietnam War to gather intelligence from deep behind enemy lines.  The teams were expert at patrolling and stealth. They would travel extensive distances to gather intelligence. Sometimes they would get caught in fire fights but that is not the purpose of recon patrols. If a recon patrol is caught in a firefight their response should be to break contact and dissappear.

To show you the things that commanders will do let me tell you about this: When LRRPS patrols did get into firefights their kill ratio was 400 to 1 so commanders began to involve them in situations that they technically should not have. There was pressure on commanders to get high body counts so to many commanders the LRRPS was the way to do this although this was not tactically or morally correct.

LRRP patrols were very vulernable when they were behind enemy lines. They probably could not count on artillery and close air support. If they ran out of food they had to live off of the land, and if they were wounded they would be in a serious fix. I have not had the pleasure of designing a custom military ring for a LRRPS team member as of yet but I welcome the opportunity.
