The DMZ in Korea divides North and South Korea. It roughly cuts the country in half and runs along the 38th parallel across the entire length of the country. The actual dividing line of the two countries is called the MDL. The MDL was the actual front line when the Korean War armistice was signed. Each side had to withdraw 2000 meters to form a buffer zone. That buffer zone is known as the DMZ. The DMZ is about 2and1/2 miles wide. Units are permitted to patrol their areas but not to cross the MDL.

Over the years there have been many incidents where North korean forces have crossed the MDL and firefights have occurred. Mnay of these incidents have been documented but the North and South Koreans skirmish more than we know. It is their country and they are deathly serious about it

I have seen the DMZ and it is very heavily fortified with tank traps, obstacles, and concertina wire. It is overwatched by all kinds of weapon systems. I could see no way possible that it could be penetrated by an attacking enemy. It may be possible but take it from me the custom military ring man. If the enemy attacks with the intention of penetrating into the south he will pay a very heavy toll because of the massive amount of obstacles and fortifications located there. I'm sure that the North Korean army has fortified their side just as much.
